Discipline Vs Commitment
There is a strong difference between discipline and commitment but in the fitness world the terms are often used in ways that don't always fit the meanings. For example.
"If your not seeing results it's because your not disciplined enough."
"Your just not committed"
Ever hear a coach say something along these lines?
Let's start by clearly defining the difference between discipline and commitment. Discipline by definition is to train people to obey rules or code of behaviour. Whereas, commitment is defined by the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause or activity. To be disciplined, is to show a controlled form of behaviour. To be committed, is to feel dedicated to a cause. Therefore, if you ask me. For one to act with discipline, they have chosen a path that is regimented. Divided simply by what you should and shouldn't do or can or cannot do. As we know, human nature has a funny way of pushing back against the boundaries of what we "can't" have. Your either in or your out. I have seen it far too many times in my career. Where clients fall off and binge hard because of the restrictive, "disciplined" mentally. When I think of commitment, I see more room to build on the concept of consistency. If someone is dedicated to their goals and because of that makes consistented efforts, you would think they would see result too? I would say it's the key to sustainable results. It is also these people who don't fall as far of the beaten trail. They have balance. However, both do play their role in goal setting. For some the moderation game is a slippery slope. I have had those moments when I set tight goals. I have leaned out a few times for photos and during those weeks, I have to stay away from treats. I can't eat just one sweet! It often turns into a dessert tray massacre. So, when I am in it to win. I have to wear my discipline hat. However, I always have on my commitment. It's there I live most of my life. I love eating to feel good, I love to exercise to make my body move. Therefore, I may have the odd cupcake attack and eat a couple too many but I am too committed to let that get the best of me.
Just remember, with every goal there is the right balance for you. Sometimes it takes some trail and error or a few pizza binges to except the fact that you just can't indulge while goal chasing. Remember, nothing ever stays the same. What you must do to reach you goals today may not be the same in a few weeks from now. Whether your disciplined or the committed or both! It is consistency that reins supreme.
